FOSSIL — Oregon state Rep. Greg Smith visited a local high school for a civics lesson before hosting a town hall for residents.
Smith, R-Heppner, on Wednesday, Jan. 28, visited Wheeler High School in Fossil. 28. He is seeking reelection to the Oregon Legislature for his 13th term.
According to a press release about the event, the lesson has students act as elected officials, journalists and community advocates to debate issues and make decisions about how to address community challenges.

Following the school visit, Smith met with members of the Fossil community for a town hall, which the release said “focused on open, constructive dialogue.” Residents shared perspectives on local priorities, ongoing challenges and areas for improvement. Smith called the town hall discussion “thoughtful, respectful and productive,” adding he felt everyone was committed to keeping debate civil.
“The Fossil community showed up in a meaningful way this Wednesday,” according to Smith. “I appreciated the opportunity to listen, exchange ideas and have a constructive dialogue with community members.”
Fossil School District Superintendent Jonathon McMurray said in the release he was grateful for the time Smith took to “be present with our students” and community during the civics lesson and town hall alike.
“It was a pleasure to host Rep. Smith at Wheeler High School,” McMurray said. “His willingness to listen and engage in a meaningful, practical way is deeply appreciated.”
